Small Group Leader Certification.
For the leaders who hold the smallest rooms in the church — formed to build relational environments that are psychologically safe and theologically sound.
Where the church actually gets honest.
Small group leaders, community and table leaders, Bible study facilitators — the people who host the rooms where most real formation happens. A group leader isn’t a therapist, and shouldn’t try to be. But they set the emotional temperature of the room: whether it’s safe to say the true thing, and what happens when someone does.
This certification forms that instinct — and the wisdom to know when a person’s need has outgrown what a group can hold.
What a certified group leader is formed in.
Ten competencies, from building the room to knowing its edge.
Building the environment
- Belonging — making the room safe before it’s deep.
- Facilitating vulnerability — inviting honesty without forcing it.
- Group dynamics — reading the room and the people in it.
Holding what surfaces
- Responding to disclosure — receiving hard truths without flinching or fixing.
- Trauma awareness — recognizing when pain is speaking.
- Difficult conversations — staying present through tension.
Formation & boundaries
- Theological formation — forming people in truth, not just managing discussion.
- Healthy boundaries — leading the group without carrying it alone.
- Conflict — tending disagreement without letting it fracture trust.
Knowing the edge
- Recognizing when needs exceed the group — and how to escalate or refer with care, so no one falls through.
Formed and assessed — not just attended.
Like every Safe & Sound pathway, this is a formation process rather than a video course. It moves a leader through teaching, practice, and reflective assessment against the competencies above — so a church can trust the room, and a leader can trust their own judgment in it.
It shares the same spine as the rest of the framework: See, Assess, Form, Equip, with a clear-eyed sense of where a group’s care ends and a care leader’s or professional’s begins. We’re developing it deliberately, and will open enrollment as it’s ready.
