Care leaders, lay counselors, deacons, care-team members, and pastoral staff — the people a church trusts to sit with someone in their hardest moment. They rarely need more theology to recite. They need to be formed for presence: to see the person before the problem, to discern what is actually happening, and to know when care has moved beyond what they should carry alone.
This certification exists so that the weight of that role is met with competence, not just good intentions.
What a certified care leader is formed in.
Twelve competencies across four movements — each practiced and assessed, not simply covered.
Presence & attunement
- Listening — hearing the whole person before responding.
- Presence — staying with someone without rushing to fix.
- Confidentiality — holding trust, and its limits, with integrity.
Awareness & discernment
- Psychological awareness — reading regulation before moral meaning.
- Trauma awareness — recognizing how pain lives in the body.
- Crisis recognition — naming risk and responding without panic.
Care & boundaries
- Theological care — bringing Scripture to bear without weaponizing it.
- Healthy boundaries — caring sustainably, without losing the self.
- Documentation — keeping wise, appropriate records of care.
Escalation & the limits of the role
- Escalation — knowing when and how to involve others.
- Referral — handing off to professional help as an act of care.
- The limits of the role — the humility to not carry what isn’t yours.
Formed and assessed — not just attended.
Certification is being built as a formation pathway, not a webinar. It will move a care leader through teaching, practice, and reflective assessment against the competencies above — so that a church can trust the recognition, and a care leader can trust their own readiness.
It is grounded in the Safe & Sound posture already in use: See, Assess, Form, Equip, with the ethical spine of confidentiality, referral, and caring for the carer. We are developing it deliberately, and will open enrollment as it’s ready.
